New Zealand has a vibrant book culture where authors and dedicated readers can meet and gather. Our authors are accesible and willing to be part of a vast array of book festivals, readings and tours promoting their newest titles. Drawing from experience, it is important to put the gathered masses at ease or create an atmosphere where authors can speak and liaise with the fans.

What better way to gather than with books at the centre. Book clubs have evolved into bookish clubs with bookish news, quiz styled games, discussion points and reviews or book readings -less prentious with a goal to be fun. I can host your next event.

Throughout my years in bookselling I have had the privilege to meet, host and MC a vast variety of author events. Many with much character, some very serious causes and themes, others were light-hearted and hilarious. Celebrities who’d penned their memoirs or cooks, chefs and foodies with delectable tales to tell. Advocates for a cause or ailment that have combined the heavy scientific findings and brought it to us for life application. The self published author with historical narratives to preserve. Local authors of both fiction and non-fiction. All of these have a place to stand in events. It is where reader and author get to hear, speak and then korero.
book clubs
For 11 years I was host of the monthly in store book club at Masterton Paper Plus – a hub that drew a consistent gathering (of mostly women but never exclusive) of loyal reading customers. More of a bookish club, it was set up to be complimentary to the private book clubs already operating. The format has stayed mostly the same over the years but there was always something fresh and new to present each month. From February to November, various themes or genres would feature. Hosting an in store book club could become a regular event for your store and add to the community hub that many local book stores are. It gives your loyal reading customers an opportunity to have specialist staff on hand, hear what’s new and meet new people with shared discussions and ‘think points’. Leading a book club is one of my most favoured tasks and I am available to host your next event with the goal to create a regular event in your store.
